چکیده

Intelligent systems capable of automatically understanding natural language text are important for many artificial intelligence applications including mobile phone voice assistants, computer vision, and robotics. Understanding language often constitutes fitting new information into a previously acquired view of the world. However, many machine reading systems rely on the text alone to infer its meaning. In this paper, we pursue a different approach; machine reading methods that make use of background knowledge to facilitate language understanding. To this end, we have developed two methods: The first method addresses prepositional phrase attachment ambiguity. It uses background knowledge within a semi-supervised machine learning algorithm that learns from both labeled and unlabeled data. This approach yields state-of-the-art results on two datasets against strong baselines; The second method extracts relationships from compound nouns. Our knowledge-aware method for compound noun analysis accurately extracts relationships and significantly outperforms a baseline that does not make use of background knowledge.

The Impact of Posing (Lead in) Pre-reading Questions on Reading Engagement of Iranian EFL Learners: Focusing on Extensive Reading

The significance and effectiveness of pre-reading activities in the contexts of both ESL and EFL has been acknowledged by many researchers. If students lack the required background knowledge, a teacher must activate students’ background knowledge or offer background information prior to reading a text. The present study aimed at investigating the role of pre-reading questions plus extensive rea...

Leveraging Knowledge Bases in LSTMs for Improving Machine Reading

This paper focuses on how to take advantage of external knowledge bases (KBs) to improve recurrent neural networks for machine reading. Traditional methods that exploit knowledge from KBs encode knowledge as discrete indicator features. Not only do these features generalize poorly, but they require task-specific feature engineering to achieve good performance. We propose KBLSTM, a novel neural ...

Machine Reading of Biomedical Texts about Alzheimer's Disease

This report describes the task Machine reading of biomedical texts about Alzheimer’s disease, which is a task of the Question Answering for Machine Reading Evaluation (QA4MRE) Lab at CLEF 2013. The task aims at exploring the ability of a machine reading system to answer questions about a scientific topic, namely Alzheimer’s disease. As in the QA4MRE task, participant systems were asked to read ...

QA4MRE 2011-2013: Overview of Question Answering for Machine Reading Evaluation

This paper describes the methodology for testing the performance of Machine Reading systems through Question Answering and Reading Comprehension Tests. This was the attempt of the QA4MRE challenge which was run as a Lab at CLEF 2011–2013. The traditional QA task was replaced by a new Machine Reading task, whose intention was to ask questions that required a deep knowledge of individual short te...

Using Episodic Memory in a Memory Based Parser to Assist Machine Reading

The central task for a Machine Reader is integrating information acquired from text with the machine’s existing knowledge. Direct Memory Access Parsing (DMAP) is a machine reading approach that leverages existing knowledge and performs integration in the early stages of parsing natural language text. DMAP treats machine reading, fundamentally, as a task of knowledge recognition, and creates new...
